When you are preparing the compost container for a worm farm, ascertain that the bedding is moist before you put in the worms. If you live in warm or hot climates, ensure that the bin is in the shade. Waste can be added daily or weekly, depending on your convenience.

When the worms commence eating, they ingest about half of their weight. Subsequently, as they are accustomed to the feed, they consume about their own weight. The previous feedings should be consumed by the worms before new food is added. Otherwise set up another bin if you have more waste food to dispose.

Many people start with a modest worm farm. It's a good idea to have a collection tray underneath the compost bin for drainage. This will prevent messy spillage. Wood soaks up water more than plastic; thus wooden bins will have less drainage than plastic ones.

When using a small container, consider its storage and the feeding of worms. These bins can be set up in one of three ways:

Continuous vertical flow The trays are stacked up on top of one another. The bottom tray gets filled first. When this tray gets full, it is not harvested but a thick layer of bedding is added on top and another tray is stacked above for adding organic material. Worms finish composting the materials in the bottom tray and then migrate to the one above. When a sufficient number of worms migrated, the worm compost at the lowermost tray can be collected and should be relatively free of worms. These bins provide an easier method of harvesting, as they do not all have to be emptied out.

Continuous horizontal flow This method is much like the vertical except that the trays are clicked together side-to-side instead of stacked. With this method, the worms tend to move toward food so that it will be easier for harvesting purposes. The bin is usually longer. A chicken wire screen divides the bin into two parts.

Non-continuous This method uses an undivided container. At the bottom, a layer of organic matter is placed on a bedding that is used as a liner. Worms are added next. Then another layer of bedding is included on top of that. When that's complete, composting will begin with the bedding and organic matter. This type of bin is small and easy to build, but difficult to harvest because all the materials and worms must be emptied out when harvesting.

Building a large scale commercial worm farm are for those who wish to establish a business. There are two types. Windrows are more commonly used. Windrows are worm farms that are made into long rows. Organic matter is piled in long rows.

These provide plenty of organic matter for the worms to consume. Only one side of the windrows is used for feeding the worms. With time, the worm bed widens and the worm castings on the back of the row can then be harvested.

The second method uses a raised bed. On the top of the bed, the worms eat about an inch of food that is laid across the top.

The leftover castings are harvested by using a breaker bar that pulls them across a large mesh screen. This screen is used to act as the worm bed's base. However, the worms and castings are not separated before packaging. It is advisable to do this indoors and is best for warmer weather.
