10 iPhone Apps for a Healthier, More Helpful Life

TakeParts list of the top 10 iPhone apps to help you is pretty diverse. They list apps from finding green companies to finding information about National Parks. While this list is only for iPhones, Im pretty sure that there is a comparable app in the other markets.

* Locavore ($2.99) helps you find the healthiest, tastiest and freshest organic produce near you. Locavore is supposed to give you a view of the local organic produce by tracking your location. It also tells you which produce is coming into season soon. The concept is great. From what I read on the customer reviews, folks dont think this app lives up to expectations. It did receive an award as one of the top 10 iPhone apps in 2009. Not sure what this says about the awards, or perhaps it is just the users

* Find Green is a free app that find sustainable and green businesses. The app really does help you find them turn by turn directions are available. It can take you to the business websites as well. The app is powered by the GenGreenLife.com database of 56,000+ green businesses and the 3rdWhale sustainability mobility platform. The app has a fairly good rating by users, and touts that it helps you find everything from yoga centers to bicycle shops to organic restaurants near you.

* Seafood Watch is put out by the Monterey Bay Aquarium folks. This free app keeps an up-to-date regional guide of sustainable seafood to help you make informed choices, whether youre eating at your favorite restaurant or sushi joint, or shopping at your local market. At a time when our worlds oceans are severely over-fished, this app makes real sense. The user reviews were great, and all recommended this app.

* The Extraordinaries app connects people to non-profit organizations that need just a few minutes of your time. The concept behind this free app is that we can all spare a few minutes to aid charity work. They call it micro-volunteering. The idea is great, but from what the users said about this app, it could be better. Apparently one user found that none of the charities listed had need for her services. I snooped around their website and found it to be intriguing. You can sign up through Facebook, making it easier to broadcast and promote the work.

* Give Work is another free app aimed at using up just a few minutes of your time to do good. The thought behind this app is that many corporations have work that 3rd world workers could do. The key is that these workers dont get paid until a third party validates that they did the job. Thats where you come in. In just a few moments you can verify and help someone get paid for the work they have done.

* Shower Time ($1.99) helps you change your shower/water usage. It listens to your shower and gives you a loud signal when its time to rinse, turn off the water, etc., thus training you. The app evens gives you the water usage and cost of your shower. Where was this app in the 1970s when California was on water rationing.

* CauseWorld was featured in the NY Times and on ABC News. This free app asks you to check in wherever you enter a participating store, giving 1 karma point. You can then donate the karma points to your favorite charity. A great idea, but as one user pointed out, the companies you can access are some of the worst offenders as far as deforestation, but at least this way you can get them to donate money to balance it out.

* GoodGuide is a free app that helps you find safe, healthy, and sustainable products while you shop. Simply scan the barcode of the product, and GoodGuide will give you all the ratings on health, environment and social responsibility for more than 70,000 products and companies. GoodGuide provides this information about personal care, household chemical, toy and food products The app also lets you make a personal shopping list and list of products to avoid.

* Fooducate is just what it sounds like. It educates you about the food you are buying. By scanning in the barcode, it alerts you to high amounts of sugar, controversial additives such as artificial food colorings, and misleading claims. The app even gives you suggestions for healthier choices. For those of us who are label readers, this app sounds like a winner.

* National Parks Guide is great for travel. The interactive guide is a wealth of information about 50 National Parks. It gives you information like which wildlife you can expect to see, as well as links for maps, campsite reservations, fees and hours of operation. For travelers, this app seems like a must have.
