The home wind turbine of today is very different than the ones we were used to seeing out in the field just a few short years ago

The answer may surprise you, but it hinges on the fact that your current utility is required by law to purchase your excess power back from you.This is really the biggest paradigm shift in the way things are being seen in the power business these days.

People are purchasing larger residential wind turbines than they need so they can export excess power created back to the utility's grid. In this system, the power you need for your home is made at the point of use - so, there is no need for a wiring transmission and distribution system.

Whatever your net power use is, that is what you get billed for by your utility each month. You may even end up having the power company pay you instead of you paying them!

In conclusion, a 10 kW wind turbine is certainly giving you way more generation capability than anyone needs for their home, but the ability to export the excess back to your utility means you are in essence becoming your own utility. The really grand part about this is that with a wind device this large, you are really independent of the actions of the utility and even of the bigger energy market.
