10 Puppy Training Rules

It is always going to take time and tolerance to train a pup

. A few, of course, will learn earlier than some others, like children in school. Therefore if YOU adhere to the rules you will get there in the long run! Only bear in mind that it is actually us that are the inconsistent ones - your pup is just as it says on the can - a dog!

1.Don't be boring. Keep it short, appealing and enjoyable. Pups have short concentration spans when they are immature; so little and often are the best policies.

2.Take advantage of feeding time - food is a fantastic training device. He will be extremely focussed if he thinks his meal will ensue, so make him sit, come, heel - doesn't matter what. You'll be astonished how amenable he is!

3.Get him to burn off his energy ahead of schooling so that he can focus more on you.

4.Be realistic - he's a pup not a person. Take it a step at a time, making sure he actually realises before moving on. Continue repeating the training as well or he will fail to remember, just as you can't bring to mind half the information you learned at school!

5.Always use exactly the same words of command or else he will get very confused. Make sure all the family utilize them too. Post them on the wall so you all use the same ones!

6.Be certain that your dog comes totally up to you before you give him a reward - never stretch out.

7.Do not give your pup a instruction if he is not listening and you understand he won't obey. If you allow your dog to disregard a order whilst he is immature, you are in fact saying that it is okay to ignore you.

8.If the exercise is going badly or you are getting annoyed then just pause and think about what you are doing. It is usually you that is the problem not the pup!

9.No matter how wound up you are every time come to an end with praise, treat and pleasure. Urge him to do anything you know he can do - just sit or lie down, and then offer him lots of fuss. By doing this he will anticipate the next training session - not dread it!

10.If you need help - ask for it! There's plenty of help out there - books, internet, classes, schools - so do not be timid!
