1. Begin by thinking about who you want to share your birthday with. This may be a few close friends or a bigger group, or even your family. This may have a bearing on the type of evening you decide to plan.

2. Think about the type of evening you want. It is, after all, your special day and it's important that you do something that's to your liking.

3. Identify a location, such as a town or city you want to go out in. It needs to be convenient for you and your guests to get to and from and have a wide selection of great venues to choose from.

4. Once you know the town or city you want to go out in, start looking at what bars and restaurants it has and where they are located. If you want a restaurant, then several bars, they will all need to be close together. If you'd prefer to stay in one place all night and hire a room or section of a venue, then just make sure it's well placed for public transport or taxis.

5. Visit the website of the venue you'd like to go to or give them a call and find out their availability on or near your birthday. You'll also want to find out menu options, costs and closing times.

6. So long as you're happy with your choice, you'll need to call round your guests and make sure they are all happy too. Tell them about the costs and, if a deposit is required, ask them to get it to you as soon as possible.

7. When you can, secure your reservation. This may require a deposit or just a name and some confirmed guest numbers.

8. Your next step is to think about transportation. Are your guests going to make their own way to the venue or will you be booking a taxi or mini-bus for everyone? If it's the latter, it's a good idea to do some ringing around for quotes before you book. Again, let your guests know how much it will cost before you book.

9. Once confirmed, book the transportation and notify everyone of pick-up and drop-off times and tell them not to be late!

10. Finally, remember to have a great time. It can be distracting if you feel responsible for making sure it goes to plan, but once everyone has arrived, relax and enjoy your big day.
