10 Things NOT To Do At A Commercial Audition
10 Things NOT To Do At A Commercial Audition
When you're out auditioning, you will be competing with hundreds and sometimes thousands of others. When a breakdown goes out to agents and managers, a casting director receives anywhere from one to five thousand photos for each role. From those, the director may call in one hundred actors for a first audition. So just the fact that you landed an audition is an accomplishment. Therefore, you don't want to blow your chances of getting the job by doing something silly. Commercial auditions differ from theatrical auditions in that anything can happen, and you never know exactly what to expect. But regardless of the situation, there are some general rules about what not to do during a commercial audition.
1. Forget your headshot and resume
Your headshot is your business card. It identifies you and gives the casting director all of your information so you they can contact your representation for call-backs.
2. Touch the casting director
Think about it: Would you want to be touched by hundreds of actors each day? Not really. If they don't offer to shake your hand, don't try to make the gesture. Go in, do your job and get out.
3. Chew gum while auditioning
Chewing gum on camera looks terrible. So unless the role asks you to specifically be chewing gum or blowing bubbles, don't do it. Fresh breath is essential, but throw away your gum before you enter the audition room.
4. Talk too much
Say hello and introduce your, and if you have an important question, certainly ask it. However, don't let the small talk go on too long as they may feel you are wasting their time. Remember, they're looking for someone their client will enjoying working with on set, a chatterbox can get annoying and is distracting.
5. Crash a casting
Crashing a casting is one of the most disrespectful things you can do, and you'll likely get caught. Casting directors always keep sheets of those scheduled for an audition. Assistants go through these and check to see who's showed up and who hasn't, and it will be clear if your name is not listed. You may also risk being blacklisted, which means that casting director might just choose to never call you for anything else in the future.
6. Show up late
Always plan ahead so that you will arrive at an audition on time. There is always traffic and other potential factors that can affect when you arrive for an audition. You also don't know how long the casting session is set to run: They may only be seeing people from 2:00 to 3:00, so arriving at 3:30 means you've missed the audition.
7. Make excuses
There is never an excuse for being unprepared, and casting directors do not like hearing them. You should always arrive early to review a copy of the script if there is one, look over the storyboard and get yourself mentally ready. If something's not perfect, just go with it and try your best.
8. Talk about acting, singing or dancing
If you are asked a general question about your personality, don't discuss acting, singing or dancing. Chances are, everyone at the audition can act, sing and dance. Set yourself apart by showing them a different side of your personality. Talk about things you believe in, your volunteer work or your favorite things to do with your free time. Be a real person.
9. Be rude
No matter what, don't be rude to anyone, including other actors. A casting assistant or someone else could be watching, and no one wants to hire or work with a rude actor.
10. Lie
You'll only get caught if you lie. When asked whether you can ice skate and blow bubbles at the same time, be honest if you never have. However, you can also back that up by explaining you are a fast learner and pick things up quickly.
These tips are not all-encompassing to being a successful actor, but serve as a guideline against common oversights and pitfalls in filmmaking. For more information on how to receive formal training in acting, please visit the International Academy of Film and Television
