10 Tips To Remember When Using Thermocouples

, there are several important issues and considerations to keep in mind. Here are some tips to help you select the best temperature device for your needs, and ensure that your workplace is well functioning.

1. It is fairly simple to attach and read a thermocouple, but that doesn't mean that operating it is a simple task. Remember that scientists and experienced chemists often make mistakes. Learn all you can about the Seebeck Effect, as well as the thermocouple make and model you are using.

2. Remember that since thermocouples measure their own temperature and not the temperature of what you're measuring, heat flow from one object to another can interfere with accuracy.

3. Keep in mind that they don't measure the temperature at junctions.

4. You should know the maximum temperature ranges for the devices you are using. Never exceed maximum or minimum temperatures.

5. When selecting what kind of temperature measurement sensor you need for a particular application, these are the things you need to keep in mind: what range of temperatures will I be working with; can I touch the object whose temperature is being measured (using a contact thermocouple) or would it be best to use a non-contact thermocouple (remember, non-contact thermocouples don't work with measuring gasses); what range of accuracy is acceptable for this particular application; what kind of conditions will I be using the measurement device in (including high velocity conditions, moisture levels, and harsh environmental conditions).

6. Different kinds of thermocouples (with different wires and metals) create varying currents.

7. If you are working in a high sanitation environment, remember that there are all different kind of thermocouples, including disposable thermocouples and disposable tips for thermocouples.

8. The magnetic qualities of various components of thermocouples vary; Iron wires (which are usually white) are always highly magnetic, while copper wires are not magnetic at all.

9. Whenever you are creating a TC connection, remember that all TC connectors must match.

10. You can find both grounded and ungrounded junctions on TCs. Grounded junctions are quicker, but they aren't always necessary. Nowadays, the choice of grounded or ungrounded junctions doesn't matter as much as it did years ago. Most modern equipment has isolated inputs that will work well with either grounded or ungrounded junctions. If you have old equipment, it is better if you go with a grounded junction, since the ungrounded may not function as well.
