10 tips on getting a security job

Looking for a job in the security industry has never been so easy. Most security companies are always looking for quality guards that are able to fulfil their clients' needs and are customer focused. A common problem shared between security businesses is finding well trained, quality and reliable staff.

I have been working in the security industry for over 14 years. During this time I have worked for a number of security providers in three states within Australia, and I have always had full employment. As long as you are well presented, show enthusiasm, exercise common sense and are punctual and reliable, you will soon gain a highly regarded reputation in the security industry.

The following tips are designed to assist you in obtaining a position within the security industry as well as increase your chances of beneficial job security. I personally use the template listed below whenever I am seeking new employment.

Remember, you are applying for a uniformed position.

1.Have a current security and Crowd Control licence for the State or Territory in which you will be working.

2.Ensure your First Aid certificate is current.

3.Have a professionally presented resume. Place a photo of yourself on the front page wearing a minimum of a shirt and tie. Make sure you do not wear excessive jewellery, have tattoos showing or unconventional piercing.

4.Send your resume to all the security companies that you wish to work for.Do not wait for them to advertise. Ensure that you include in your resume all your qualities to enhance your employment prospects.

5.If you have had no communication from the company within a week, it is advisable to follow up with a phone call to enquire as to whether your application was successful or if any further information or clarification is required.

6.Keep in regular communication with your security training provider, (make sure your qualifications are up to date and current). Most states and territories require a Certificate II in Security Operations as a minimum training standard, however a Certificate III in Security Operations will benefit your employment prospects.

7.Always attend your interview in a business suit, or at a minimum a shirt and tie, neatly ironed slacks and black leather lace up shoes. Have a copy of your resume with you, all your certificates, security and crowd control licence, driver's licence and any other information that may increase your opportunities of securing a position.

8.During your interview, be confident, yet not conceited. Show enthusiasm, listen to the questions being asked of you before answering, and in doing so, remember that the onus is on you to persuade the employer to choose you over all other applicants. Emphasise your employability strengths and qualities such as your strong beliefs in company loyalty, your enthusiasm to learn and grow with the company, your willingness to be flexible when it comes to various positions, your philosophy on the importance of client/customer service, your moral principals and job ethics.

9.When you have secured employment, remember that flexibility and cooperation are important strategies to protecting your employment and for advancement within the company.

10.It is very rare that you will be assigned the most prominent or prestigious positions the company has to offer at the commencement of your employment. It is generally these positions that will be assigned to the staff that have a proven record of loyalty to the company and who have an extensive employment history. If you are flexible and accept the positions offered to you, regardless of whether they are on the higher or lower scale of importance, your willingness to oblige and provide the same high level of professionalism and quality service to every position, will pay dividends and will not go unnoticed by your employer, which in turn can only enhance your employment advancement.
