My No. 1 mistake is thinking "I know best". I made all the silly mistakes of believing the 'sure win' tips, betting on the favourites, expecting that they will never lose and betting on games just because they are telecast live, etc.

I betted without even thoroughly understanding the 'basics of betting'. I also spent a lot of money buying guaranteed systems that didn't work most of the time, and paying for 'insider tips' that didn't win most of the time.

My losses piled up. Sanity and logic flew out of the window. The fundamental mantra of discipline and money management were all forgotten. Emotion and irrationality took control.

Bad judgment produced one disastrous result after another. To recoup my losses, I adopted the suicidal aggressive method of recklessly doubling up my betting stake, hoping in casino terms 'one win would recover all'.

But I lost more than I won. And most of the bets I was winning had a payout so marginal I barely made any money. My financial situation hit rock-bottom.

Fortunately, my good sense prevailed. I decided to 'go back to basics'.
