11 Ways To Keep Windows Computers Running Their Best
There are a number of ways that people using computers running Microsoft Windows can keep their system running smoothly
. Here is a good starting point for minimizing computing headaches, extending the life of your computer and helping to keep your computer running its best on a day to day basis.
1. Use Security Software -- Use Antivirus and Internet Firewall software. Using an Internet Security Suite is the most effective solution. And be sure to keep the software up to date. Never run more than one antivirus program or firewall program. Run a full system scan at least once a week.
2. Recyle Bin - Empty the Recycle Bin at least once a week.
3. Email Trash - In Email be sure to "take out the Trash" and empty the Trash folder periodically
4. Tune Ups - If you are not technically knowledgeable have an experienced technican tune up your computer once a year.
5. Windows Updates -- Install updates for Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office as they become available from Microsoft.
6. Physical Cleaning -- Desktop computer vents should be checked for dust periodically. If the vents are clogged with dust or pet hair the computer may run significantly hotter which can damage the system. Check both front and back vents. Clean with a vacuum if dusty, but turn the computer off first.
7. Spam Filtering -- Use a Spam filter for all incoming email and check periodically to make sure that the filtering is set to the correct level - not too low. Check your Spam folder periodically to make sure good mail is not being flagged as Spam.
8. Browser Toolbars -- If you add a Toolbar to your browser only use one. Multiple Toolbars can slow your browsing and add duplicate functionality.
9. Pop Up Blocker -- Do not download, or install Pop-Up blocker programs. Both Internet Explorer and Firefox provide this capability so additional software is unnecessary.
10. Be Diligent -- Keep all components such as Windows, security software, application programs and Internet browsers up to date.
11. Defragmenting - For optimum performance your hard disk drive should be defragmented every month or two. Not as necessary with computers running Windows Vista and Windows 7 as it is done in the background automatically.
