13 Dorm Room Essentials For College Students
Shopping for equipment without creating a to-buy list is a big mistake when preparing to move in in dorms
. Chances are, you would end up owning useless items, and missing out on the essentials.
So what are those commonly-forgotten stuff that you should be packing?
Flip flops. You would not want to walk around the dorm barefoot, especially when you are using communal restrooms and kitchen. Bring a pair of slippers and save yourself from stepping on something gross or hair-raising.
Printer. It is best that you bring your own printer even when there are printers in libraries that you could use for free. Falling in line for almost an hour only to find out that the paper size you need is no longer available, and that there is not even a stapler around is frustrating. So bring a heavy-duty stapler and stock up on staple wire.
Mini reading light. When you are pulling all-nighters or probably having a hard time sleeping that you would rather read, then a mini lamp which you could clip on the bed's headboard, or on your book is an ideal company.
Desk accessories. Clutter is the least you would like to see when you are studying. Stow in pen jars or file organizers so you can keep everything organized on your study table.
Ear plugs. This will prove useful especially when you happen to have quite an insensitive, and hyperactive roommate. It will keep you sleeping sound even when your roommate has again turned the speaker volume up, and invited friends over and laughed in chorus until 3AM.
Under bed storage. These are ideal for additional storage space as closets might not fit in your room. This is also one strategy to keeping your stuff look organized (even if they really are not). Also, there are several designs you can choose from, so you can get trendy on this one.
Tupperwares. Save on food expenses and bring tupperwares in your dorm room, so you could easily store cereals, vegetables, fruits, and even some leftover dishes you have taken from home.
Spill-proof mug. Since the space you have is limited, you might inadvertently bump into anything, and the coffee you are holding might spill over the term papers you roommate has been laboring hard for weeks. Keep a spill-proof mug which you can also use in class.
Mini-fridge. This might sound like off-the-budget but in the long run,is actually worth the investment. You would not have to run downstairs to grab quick snacks at the kitchen. Also, you get to avoid your groceries from getting stolen. It happens.
Toiletries. It is best that you keep your own supplies so you would not have to go out and purchase everytime. Install a durable rack where you could place your toiletries.
Folding laundry hamper. You would not want to disgust your roommate with your used clothes all piled up on top of bed, desk or chair. Bring a folding basket where you can throw in your laundry.
Iron and small ironing board. Wearing old clothes is fine as long as you look neat and presentable. Since you are to do the laundry, you might as well learn to iron your clothes, especially those that need special care.
Extension cord. Before you know it, you room is already all plugged up. Carry extension cords for additional outlets.
Shop only when have seen the dorm room dimensions. Be considerate as you are going to share the space with another student.
