The World Series of Poker is the biggest event in the world of gambling that takes place each year. The tournament features the best players in world. These players take on each other in hopes of proving that they are the best that the world has to offer. The 1999 World Series of Poker featured three hundred and ninety three competitors. Each player is responsible for a ten thousand dollar entry fee. This would produce a pool of money of nearly 4 million dollars.

The winner of the field would win a million dollars and a 14 karat gold bracelet. This gold bracelet is the trophy that represents the World Series of Poker in general. There would only be one winner of course. With such an enormous field it would be difficult for the best players to stand out like they did in years past. In years past there would commonly be finishes with the best players squaring off in the final table. With so many players the element of luck would be much more prevalent than it was historically. Many people have said that the presence of so many players has allowed sub-par players to take control of the sport.

As in years past, the field began to be whittled down rather quickly. The good and the poor players were all among the victims falling in the early stages of the World Series of Poker. As players started to fall there were a few players that managed to stick out from the crowd. Huck Seed, Padraig Parkinson, Erik Seidel, Alan Goehring, Chris Bigler and J.J. Furlong were the remaining players at the final table.

Furlong was the leader going into the table. He had 1.5 million in chips going into the table and was able to take control early on. Huck Seed was the first player that was eliminated from the table. After Seed fell Bigler was eliminated from the table.

Seidel tried to make a move, but things just didn't go good for him. He was eliminated with his big move. He left the table with 279, 500 dollars. The next player to fall out of contention was Parkinson. Furlong eliminated him personally. Parkinson would leave with a prize of 489,125 dollars.

The only two players remaining at the table were Furlong and Goehring. These two players fought it out for a while, but in the end Furlong had too much going in his favor. Furlong had pocket 5's and a 5 was laid out. This game him the edge and he managed to take home the 1999 World Series of Poker championship. He would win the million dollar prize and the 14 karat gold bracelet. Goehring would go with with 768, 625 dollars.

Furlong furthered the argument that the growth of the World Series of Poker has changed the way it's played. Furlong was more of a player than played for fun rather than someone who pursued it as a career. He had made his money before ever playing through other business.
