In my experience I find that there are 3 major groups of people that are looking for alternate solutions to 1Shopping cart.
1Shoppingcart Alternative - The Cart Discounter
The online shopping cart discounter is looking for the bottom line best deal and is willing to perform extensive customization of the product or accept the product limitations that the shopping cart comes with "out of the box".
Magento is a favorite among the "techie" crowd for the very same reasons the normal business person hates Magento. Easily customized for the high end and experienced webmaster but a labyrinth to figure out for everyone else.
Free and open source are 2 good qualities as long as you recognize that the costs to customize and make Magento a "usable" product will cost you based upon the level of customization needed.
Oscommerce is another open source shopping cart popular amongst the home business set. Low cost and a wealth of users and templates is a major advantage of Oscommerce.
On the downside there is really no support except getting on the forums and hoping for the best. And because the program has no real dedicated programming staff to drive features, the system tends to lag the more modern professional software.
But the real downside to all these "boxed" solutions is their inability to be PCI compliant and still operate the way most people expect.
If you're willing to send your customers off your site to a generic payment page, then you can use the systems and be PCI compliant. But if you're simply using them in their "standard" configuration, you'll really be taking a major risk with your business. With penalties up to $10,000 per incident, this is too much risk for all but the bravest businesses.
1Shoppingcart Alternatives - Direct Competitors
1Shoppingcart has a fairly limited feature set and there are multiple competitors that are comparable in a head to head comparison.
Since they're all basically the same product, and at the same price point, I'll try to point out the differences only when they exist as these fall into the category of personal preferences more than true functional differences.
Roman Cart, Red Oak Cart and UltraCart are all respectable alternatives to 1Shoppingcart and could easily fill your needs.
All of these carts will perform in a very similar fashion to 1Shoppingcart as they all have the basic cart systems in place. These options have varying degrees of support and I recommend calling them each before making a decision on which to choose.
1Shoppingcart charges for support and this is never a good sign in my opinion.
*Premium Web Cart could be considered a direct comparison based upon pricing but because of its much higher level of functionality I've chosen to place Premium Web Cart in the next category where it fits best.
1Shopping cart Alternatives - Higher Performance Options
There are 3 main competitors that operate as higher performance alternatives to 1Shopping cart.
Infusionsoft - This option essentially does the exact same thing as 1Shoppingcart but there are 3 major differences.
Much More Expensive - Infusionsoft is about triple the cost on the low end and up to 6 or 7 times more per month on the high end.
Email Service - 1Shoppingcart has an internal auto responder function built into their service but a common trend is to not use the service and instead pay for a 3rd party system such as Aweber. With Infusionsoft, the email system actually works and there is rarely a need to pay for a 3rd party system.
Infusionsoft CRM - A built in and integrated CRM system can be a real jewel when used properly to better manage customers and customer leads.
Nanacast - Again, this option is essentially the same product as 1Shoppingcart but it's 50% more expensive to operate and it includes a membership system with the software.
The huge downside to Nanacast is the lack of customer support. Since Nanacast is essentially a "1 man show", there is no phone support or even a phone number or address listed anywhere on their website.
This might work well for other "bedroom business models" but it's not a good sign for someone looking for a long term business solution with business growth envisioned.
PremiumWebCart - This solution is the highest performance and the best value of all the 1Shoppingcart alternatives.
