Although I'm sure you're aware of the fact that article writing generates links back to your site, but failing to recognize, and therefore maximize the fact that article marketing can generate more visitors and better search engine results, is tantamount to trying to fire an empty gun.

Yes, keywords are important, but don't overdo them. Anchor texts are also effective, but are dependent on the guidelines of each individual article directory.

Back linking is important, but then so is the viral factor.

Getting publishers with large audiences to pick up your articles will spread not only your links, but will enhance your reputation, which in turn will entice more publishers and you will begin leveraging other brands because of the quality of your work. On top of that search engine optimization will naturally increase following this upsurge in population.

But this will only happen if your article has something to offer publishers in the beginning, or more importantly, their readers. So put all your effort into making sure your article answers a specific need and is unique in answering it.
