2 States: The Story Of My Marriage By Chetan Bhagat
The book 2 States had to be dedicated to the in-laws of Chetan Bhagat for obvious reasons
. He would not have been able to write this book without them. He admits his in-laws are the inspiration for 2 States but also says at the same time the book should be treated as fiction. It is difficult to agree to this notion, since most of the couples in the country have undergone similar experiences even if the couple belongs to two different districts only (or even suburbs). Even the usual movies being made in India work their stories around the same theme.
A Mirror of the Authors Life
The book discusses the struggle a couple studying in IIM Ahmedabad go through when they decide to get married despite their cultural differences. The story is about Krish (Punjabi boy) and Ananya (a Tamil Brahmin), just like the trajectory of Chetan Bhagats life. The only problem they face is they dont want to run away from their families, they want to convince them to give their blessings.
Taking Turns to Convince the Families
Both the protagonists take turns to convince each others families, because they believe a solemn occasion like marriage needs to involve their entire families. Krish also gets four gold rings for the entire family of the girl; after all its a huge project he is embarking on. Krish is not the usual Punjabi boy, neither is Ananya, probably the credit for this goes to IIM Ahmedabad. Ananya is not as dark as she is expected to be (the boys family reminds her over and over again).
Close to Reality
The central theme of the book is very close to the reality, and you cannot help but notice the differences between the two different cultures. Punjabi music is loud and boisterous whereas the Tamil Carnatic music is soft and soothing. The way the plot of 2 States progresses is entirely predictable, partly because the subject has been touched by other writers also. The book questions the reasons which make the lovers themselves think if it is worth it to antagonize so many of their relatives for the sake of marriage?
Simple yet Intricate Story
This is a simple story, but gets as intricate as it can in India. Indian marriages are a family affair and the book underscores the fact very well. Chetan Bhagat is no stranger to telling good stories three blockbusters and one in works, this man is used to acclaim. Critics pan him for not being a literary genius, but the man does enjoy mass appeal and a following which even the critics cannot explain.
