2010 Coin Designs Feature Abraham Lincoln

Coin collectors and Abraham Lincoln enthusiasts will have something new to look for in their pocket change during 2010

. The United States Mint will issue a brand new reverse design for the penny and a circulating one dollar coin featuring Abraham Lincoln. These two coins will provide a suitable capstone to the coins previously issued during 2009 to celebrate Lincoln's bicentennial.

During 2009, the United States Mint had issued four different reverse designs for the Lincoln Penny. Each design was intended to represent a different stage in his life. The first design featured a log cabin to represent his birthplace and childhood in Kentucky. This was followed by a design depicting a young Lincoln taking a break from log splitting to read a book. The third design represented his professional life spent in Illinois. The fourth and final design depicted the half completed Capitol dome to represent his Presidency in Washington DC.

Besides the new penny designs, the U.S. Mint had also issued a special commemorative silver dollar coin. This coin was minted in 90% silver and 10% copper, and sold directly to collectors at a premium. The maximum mintage of 500,000 has now been sold out. The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Lincoln and the reverse includes the closing words of the Gettysburg Address.

For 2010, the new penny design will depict the Union Shield, consisting of thirteen vertical stripes representing the thirteen original states and a single horizontal bar uniting the states in a single compact union. The Union Shield dates back to the 1780's and was widely used during the Civil War. The obverse of the coin will continue to bear the familiar portrait of Lincoln that has graced the penny since 1909.

The upcoming circulating Lincoln Dollar coin will be issued as part of the Presidential Dollar coin series. This series began in 2007 to honor the former Presidents of the United States in the order served. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Dollar will represent the sixteenth release of the series. It will feature an image of Lincoln on the obverse of the coin and a rendition of the Statue of Liberty on the reverse.

Lincoln has become a familiar figure on United States coins and currency, having appeared on the penny since 1909. The public can look forward to a continuation of the tradition with these new coin designs scheduled to be released in 2010.
