2010 ULM Football Predicitons

The ULM Warhawks finished up the 2009 season at 6-6 overall and finished third in the Sun Belt Conference at 5-3

. The Warhawks decided that it was time for a change at head coach and let Charlie Weatherbie go this offseason replaced him with Todd Berry, who has spent the last three seasons as the offensive coordinator at UNLV. Berry steps into what looks like a rebuilding season for the Warhawks, as ULM has just 10 starters back for the 2010 season. To get a better idea of what the Warhawks will look like this season, here is a quick preview of what they will send out on both sides of the ball, plus my prediction on where they finish the season in the Sun Belt Conference.

Offense:

The Warhawks figure to be very strong at the quarterback position in 2010, as they return senior starting quarterback Trey Revell, who completed nearly 58% of his passes for 1,739 yards and 12 touchdowns. Revell was hurt for two games last year and freshman Cody Wells stepped in and did a pretty fine job. Wells will enter the 2010 season battling red-shirt freshman Kolton Browning for the No.2 spot.

The Warhawks will likely feature one of the top running backs in the Sun Belt Conference this season in senior Frank Goodin, who rushed for a team best 1,126 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2009. Revell is also a threat in the running game for the Warhawks, as he finished second on the team with 354 yards and five touchdowns.

ULM will head into the 2010 season without their top two threats in the passing game from 2009, but they might not be as bad off as you would initially think. Junior wide out Luther Ambrose finished third on the team with 34 catches for 455 yards and four scores, and should emerge as the go to guy this season. Also keep an eye out for senior tight end Alvin Jordan, as he caught 24 passes for 250 yards and two scores last season.

The Warhawks will be strong on the left side of the line, as junior left tackle Justin Roberts and talented sophomore left guard Jonathan Gill both are back. The problem is these are the only two starters back on the offensive line, and this unit will be a big concern for the Warhawks heading into the 2010 season.

Defense:

The Warhawks will have just four starters back on the defensive side of the ball this season, and that usually is a pretty good recipe for a down year. The Aggies only have one starter back up front in their 3-4 scheme, but it is one of the top defensive lineman in the Sun Belt Conference in junior defensive end Troy Evans, who led the Warhawks with 6.5 sacks a year ago.

With just one starter back at the four linebacker spots, the Warhawks figure to really struggle in the middle of the field. Senior Theo Smith is the only starter back, so that means a lot of new faces are going to have to step up and play well right away. It looks as though the three new starters will be senior Alex Ibe, junior Jason Edwards, and sophomore DACorris Ford, all of which saw some playing time last season.

The Warhawks have a couple of solid starters back in the secondary, as junior corner Nate Brown and junior strong safety Darius Prelow are two of the better players at their positions in the Sun Belt. Heading into the fall it looks as though junior Montavious Hill will step in and start at the other corner spot, while sophomore Khairi Usher is the projected new starter at free safety.

Sun Belt Predictions - 7th: While it definitely looks like the Warhawks are going to be down in 2010 compared to years past, I don't think they are going to be as bad as a lot of people are predicting. I think they still manage to finish ahead of FIU, Louisiana, and Western Kentucky in the Sun Belt, and I give them at least one win in non-conference play to push their season total to right around 4-5 wins.
