3 Classes And 9 Types Of Federal Firearms License

The National Firearms Act (NFA) imposes legal requirements and laws on manufacturing and selling business of firearms

. There are two titles of Federal Firearms Laws, Title I is the Guns Control Act of 1968, while Title II is the National Firearms Act. NFA is concerned with imposing legislative excise tax over manufacturing and selling of certain firearms and it is also the directive authority for registration of those firearms. NFA specific firearms include silencers, machine guns, and short-barreled rifles.

The first registration as well as the transfer of ownership of previously registered firearms is done through the federal National Firearms Act Registry. Moreover, it implies that owners must report to the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) in case they are transporting the NFA firearms across state borders.

The National Firearms Act has defined the following 3 classes and 9 types of Federal Firearms License:

Class I

Class I of FFL refers to a Special Occupation Taxpayer (SOT) importer of NFA firearms. In order to carry a firearms import business, Class I license must be held by the importer.

Class II

Class II of FFL refers to a Special Occupation Taxpayer (SOT) manufacturer of NFA firearms. In order to carry a firearms manufacturing business, Class II license must be held by the manufacturer.

Class III

Class III of FFL refers to a Special Occupation Taxpayer (SOT) dealer of NFA firearms. In order to carry a firearms dealership business, Class III license must be held by the dealer.

Type I

Type I refers to a Title I dealer or gunsmith, but it essentially deals with devices that are not the destructive weapons.

Type II

Type II also refers to a Title I dealer, but this type of dealer conducts his business as a pawnbroker.

Type III

Type III is held by an approved and licensed collector of CR (Curio and Relic) firearms.

Type VI

This license type is held by a manufacturer of ammunitions and reloading components. One thing that is not included in this license is the manufacturing of Armor Piercing ammunitions.

Type VII

This is a licensed Title I manufacturer of all firearms and ammunitions except NFA, and destructive and Armor Piercing ammunitions.

Type VIII

It refers to an importer of Title I firearms.

Type IX

It refers to a dealer of Title I firearms.

Type X

It refers to a maker of Title I firearms.

Type XI

It refers to an importer of Title I firearms, ammunitions, and the NFA destructive devices.
