3 Common Acne Misconceptions

As an acne sufferer, and as the author of an acne blog

, I come across common acne misconceptions all the time. People beginning research on the topic, confused teenagers, and even myself at one time, all run into the same myths concerning acne. I'm here to bring you the truth on common facts that are wrong.

Food and Acne

Certain foods affect acne. Some of the common ones being milk, chocolate, sugar, seafood and chips. Some people swear, these things affect their acne. However over the course of several scientific studies, it has been show that there's no relationship between these foods and acne.

Some reasons people believe these foods effect their acne, could be because they're so desperate to find a solution that they put it down to anything they can see a remote pattern in. In fact our brain likes to find patterns in things, and can commonly find patterns where non really exist. However, if you think there really is a food that effects your acne, then be sure to test it, over and over and over again until you're completely certain. Otherwise you may just be depriving yourself of food for no reason!

Cleanliness and Acne

Acne is caused by being unclean. Acne is definitely not caused by dirt, no matter what anybody says. This rumor probably exists because blackheads and naturally black, and this can look like dirt on the skin. Acne is actually caused by blockages within your follicle channels, by skin cells and a build up of sebum there. Cleaning your skin can help, although doing so too thoroughly can actually make your acne worse, due to damaging the skin.

Sex and Acne

Sex, celibacy and masturbation cause acne. This is strictly a rumor, however either one of those could reduce or increase your acne, because they all affect hormone levels within the body. I wouldn't suggest using any of these as a basis for your acne regime, there are much better products/treatments out there.
