3 Common College Dorm Pest Control Problems

When heading off to college, no one wants to be the one who gets stuck with the "bad" roommate

. You know - the one who invades your personal space, goes through your stuff, eats your food, invites over a hoard of pesky friends, bites you in the night, and has more than two legs. That's right; we're talking about roommates of the insect variety.

Dorm rooms are popular hangouts for many pests, and recently there have been increasing reports of bug infestations in dorm rooms in college towns such as Seattle. Bed bugs, silverfish, and flies or gnats are the three main contenders frequently found in college dorms.

Bed Bugs

It doesn't matter if you're attending college in New York City or Seattle; bed bugs love cramped spaces - especially mattresses, where they can access humans easily. They can survive up to a year without consuming human blood, so don't expect your dorm room to be free of bed bugs simply because it hasn't been occupied for the past few months.

Before putting bedding on the mattress, conducting a careful inspection. Use a flashlight to search all corners, nooks, crannies and baseboards for unwelcome pests. A fully grown bed bug can be as big as an apple seed, but the earlier stages are much harder to detect. If you don't already own one, consider getting a bed bug-proof mattress cover. If the search uncovers even a single bed bug, Seattle-bound students should inform the dorm hall personnel immediately.

Silverfish

Silverfish have scales that range from brown to silver (hence the name). They eat glue and paper and are often located in places where there are a lot of books that are infrequently used.

Silverfish are drawn to very warm and moist environments, between 70-80 degrees. You will usually find them in dorm rooms during late spring and early summer in college cities such as Seattle. Pest control for these pests requires lowering the moisture in the room and cutting off water sources. A handy tip to avoid silverfish is to remember not to leave used bath towels or wet clothes lying around on the floor.

Flies and Gnats

Another common Seattle pest control problem in dorms involves flies and gnats. These pests are extremely frustrating and difficult to get rid of. Flies are attracted to any and all food as well as decaying organisms. to vacuum up any food debris regularly to prevent flies from finding tasty morsels. Gnats are smaller versions of flies, and they focus more on feasting upon liquids. Items such as a partially full cup of water, leaky pipes and shower stalls, etc. are ideal hangout spots for gnats. Make sure to keep all dirty dishes and trash out of your room, and invest in a fly swatter as a precaution.

Don't think you are alone in this battle against dormroom pest infestations. Complaints of pest invasions in dorm rooms have spiked, even in places such as Seattle. Pest control doesn't have to be an issue if you take care of the problem as soon as possible. Notify your resident hall assistant immediately if you notice any of these pests in your dorm room.
