Let me ask you a simple question

Let me ask you a simple question. Would you like to earn over1000 a week as a personal trainer?

*Error One: The failure to create a client management system.

This means you have no way of checking who you have trained, or even been in contact with, their level of interest and then if/how much money they spent!

We've all heard the idea that it's cheaper to sell to clients we already know than to find new ones... and yet my income jumped 500 in five days when I started using this tool.


A client management system will show whether the people we already know are fully utilising the services and products we offer that could help them.

In other words, if you haven't told everyone you know what you can offer, how can you expect them to pay you for it? Also, if what you offer is any good you are 'cheating' them out of benefits - are you not? A client management system can be built simply:

A. Open a spreadsheet or get a big bit of paper.

B. Note clients names down the left side of the page in alphabetical order.

C. Across the bottom from left to right put down all your services and products. For example: Group Fat Loss Block Booked Class, 1-2-1 PT, Performance Programme creation.

D. Shade in the grid squares where the client has purchased a product or service. If they haven't purchased, do they know about it? If not get them told! Then put a T (Told) in the box, when they buy put a S (Sold).

**Error Two: Failure to listen systematically.

Once I started applying a listening system, the length of time people kept training with me grew rapidly from weeks to months. A great listener will usually maintain client relationships for years!

This isn't some flakey or fake concept. You do have to be genuinely interested in people or this won't work, it's not a just a 'technique'.

Ask focussed questions to help people move on with their training and life, and then listen to their replies. This means not interrupting!

Read Nancy Kline's classic, "Time To Think" for brilliant and useable ideas on this system.

I would encourage all trainers who want to serve and help people, to think seriously about working on listening and by so doing building relationships with their clients rather than thinking of them as cash machines!

***Error Three: Going after the 'big money' model of high paying One To One clients! This is what I call the 'holy grail'.

It's always going to be tough to find enough wealthy and motivated clients in your local area no matter how good a trainer you are.

Is it easier to get ten people paying 10 each or one person paying 100 for the same workout?

This isn't rocket science is it guys?

I can tell you I do have clients who pay me 100 plus, and I have groups as well, but we all know which is most feasible, especially if you are just starting out.

Groups have other benefits as well, support and sense of belonging as well as accountability or even fun for all of you - yes being a personal trainer should be fun!

I am ashamed to admit that I missed this for years and yet it is so easy to fix.

To massively leverage your earning potential focus on groups!


To wrap this up guys, I hope you will avoid these three errors, (which I made for years :-) and blast though to a grand a week personal training business fast, because the world need more leaders like you!

Create a client management system, learn a listening method, and build groups to lead.

You are a leader and a motivator, that's why you do what you do, so lead the most people you can, give them value and you deserve to be fairly rewarded.
