Set yourself a realistic goal in a set amount of time. It's so much easier to measure results when you know where you are heading. Note that it's normal to lose 1 pound a week. Any more than that and you are doing better than average. If the goal is really big it's very good to break it into smaller milestones. That will allow you to have small victories that will keep you motivated. I personally weigh myself every single day. I know that the weight can fluctuate 1 or 2 pounds up or down. I only focus on my weekly numbers but do the daily routine to keep extra good watch on my weight.

Secondly you need support

Family and friends are not enough support. They might also unconsciously sabotage your success. You see, deep down, people find it hard to watch others succeed where they have failed. What you should do is join a support group. It can be something in you local community or simply online. This will also give you the opportunity to trade tips, tricks and recipes. It's also good to have regular contact with plenty of people that are fighting the same battle as you are.

My third and final advice to you is about mentality

You have to become a positive thinker. If you think: "well I don't really think I can lose all this weight, but I'm going to try" then you can just quit right now. You have to be positive and believe that you can succeed. Without positive thinking you will lose this battle. Keep you mind in a "can do" attitude towards your eating habits, training and life in general. It will help you to overcome those gray days when everything seems pointless and you want to give up. Even if you run of the tracks, positive thinking will get you back on track the day after. Don't underestimate the power of positive thinking.
