Some patients have expressed concern over metal poisoning and the degradable implants made out of magnesium alloys. While studies are in progress to explore the affects of the excess metals on the body, doctors using the materials are confident that the benefits of the implants outweigh the risks. However, patients looking to undergo surgery to insert a magnesium alloy implant should understand what some of those risks are and when they should or should not worry.

1. Alloy Poisoning

Magnesium is bio-compatible with the human body. As it corrodes, the body funnels the materials out in the form of waste, without interfering with other body systems. The problem is the other alloys that have been tested for use with the magnesium. Aluminum, for example, could potentially harm the body if it is not processed correctly as waste upon corrosion. According to the journal Recent Patents on Corrosion Science, the release of too many aluminum ions has been linked to chronic illnesses such as peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimer's disease. However, these results have come from aluminum alloy tests.

2. Premature Corrosion

Corrosion is the key to a successful alloy implant treatment. Sometimes the corrosion process works a little too well, reducing the metal material before the bone has fully "filled in". No orthopedic surgeon can predict how fast every bone will heal. The process is complicated by bone disorders and nutrition habits that limit the healing process. Chemical interactions that speed up corrosion also occur. The result is a bone that is vulnerable to fractures in the future and other issues including pain, malformation of the bone and even infection. Researchers are working on ways to ensure that the metal sticks around until the bone heals.

3. Re-fracture

Once a bone breaks, it does re-grow. That is the process that the magnesium alloy implants help aid. Once the alloy has corroded and is expelled from the body, the bone is left to its own strength. That spot is vulnerable in the future. Proper rehabilitation and use limitations are in order.

Magnesium alloy implants are a fairly new but quickly growing treatment for complicated bone breaks. Before, the only option was a metal implant that was permanent and came with permanent limitations on the use of the bone. Degradable magnesium implants offer a temporary solution with the potential for movement with no limitations once the bone has completely healed. The potential does seem to outweigh the risks and unknowns at this point.
