3 Main Causes Of Silverfish Infestations In The Home

Silverfish are small pearly grey wingless insects that like to hide in dark places that are moist

. In the home this is most likely to be under your kitchen sinks or bathrooms!

The good news is that they are not harmful to humans; however, once a silverfish infestation occurs in the home it can be difficult and irritating to control.

Although they pose no harm to humans themselves they can destroy your books, clothes, cloth furniture and even food. Silverfish commonly come out during the night and crawl onto counters, bathtubs, your bed and any other surface in search for materials and foods high in starch, protein and sugar.

So what are the main causes of silverfish in the home?

Environment - Silverfish need to eat and drink in order to survive. Leaving food lying around the house or leaving the bathroom damp attracts the silverfish. Avoid creating an environment that they can thrive in by taking a few simple precautions such as reducing the dampness in your bathroom by mopping up any spilt water once you have finished taking a bath or a shower. Also avoid leaving food bits out in the open before going to bed, a quick wipe of the dining table or kitchen surfaces is a great routine.

Temperature - An ideal temperature for silverfish is anywhere between 21-27 degrees. If your home is regularly dark and cool then chances are you are providing optimum conditions for silverfish to live and breed. When possible try keeping the temperature below 21 degrees and that will encourage them to take shelter elsewhere.

Neglect - Food, water and temperature can all contribute to the infestation of silverfish in your home, ensure your home is as damp free and clean as possible. At the first sign of any silverfish presence in your home, calling a professional pest control exterminator is best done sooner rather than later.

Humans - If silverfish havent found their own way into your home then chances are you brought them into the house with you. Prior to coming home check any paper items you may be carrying with you, it can be anything from cardboard boxes, paper bags, and newspapers to any other paper based material.
