Conventional needle-based technology presents infection problems that can be hard to solve. Newer methods to overcome the infection dilemma have come on board, and they work. The implementation of needleless IV ports has instituted a system that makes it more difficult for infectious bodies to enter a patient's bloodstream.
Needleless IV ports are better situated for cleaning and disinfecting. They also give care-givers protection from accidental needle "sticks" that could possibly carry harmful pathogens. Many of the improved IV ports have "anti-microbial" coatings capable of heading off contamination and the spread of many pathogens that can gather on the ports' surfaces. The needleless IV ports also have a smaller opening for accessing a patient's bloodstream. This makes it harder for infections to take over.
A survey conducted by federal health officials shows that 50 percent of injuries caused by careless or accidental needle handling occurs during the time when a procedure is finished and the device is discarded. Health care workers are also subject to injury when a patient suddenly moves and causes a needle to jerk free and stick the caregiver. Injection devices that require disassembly after use are connected to more needle-based injuries. Unfortunately, the survey concluded that not even the best technology can prevent all the problems associated with needle and needleless systems.
Needleless systems involve placing a device on the visible end of a catheter that permits the insertion of a syringe/administration set and not have to remove it or stick it with a needle. Closing the syringe/administration set immediately shuts the device. Technical improvements continue to appear, hopefully setting the stage for devices to be constructed that provide more protection for patients and their caregivers.
Patients who have been fixed with needleless IV ports appreciate how the system makes their procedures more bearable. Health practitioners like the simplicity of devices capable of delivering a variety of drugs that don't require reformulation. The devices also allow for extensive customizing of particular pharmaceuticals. Injection volumes, injection sites and depths are made easier.
