The art of getting free traffic from search engines is called "Search Engine Optimization" or SEO. There are 3 major components in SEO content, on-page optimization and off-site optimization. This overview will give you better understanding of foundational SEO.

Content

Content is the meat of your website and plays a very important role in search engine optimization. If you take a look around at some of the top search results for any topic, you will see that they are full of unique content.

But just being unique is not enough it must be relevant as well. There's no point for you to have a hundred unique pages or posts talking about digital cameras, when your site is about cars. You might get ranked, but chances are you'll be drawing the wrong crowd.

On-Page Optimization

It's important that your page is already optimized before you do any external SEO. The title of your website or page is one of the most important on-page optimizations you can do and is something a lot of people don't understand.

You also need to make sure that you have the proper Meta description and header tags to aid search crawlers in indexing your page correctly. If you're using a blogging platform such as WordPress, this can easily be done using plugins like the All in One SEO Pack.

Another good idea is to put your main keyword in your first and last paragraph of your page. At the same time, you do not want to repeat your main keywords too many times. Search engines might think that you are trying to trick them and may penalize your search rankings.

Off-Site Optimization

Backlinks is the third major components of SEO and takes the longest time to accomplish. Having lots of one way backlinks to your site with the appropriate anchor text will help search engines decide how well to rank your site among the millions of others.

You need a balance between quality and quantity for the backlinks. When you have a backlink from a high authority site, it may give more weight to your website than having 100 backlinks from unknown websites.

Article directories are one of the places you can drop backlinks. Though article directories may not have as high authority in the eyes of search engines as before, they can still help.

Blog commenting is another way you can jump start your search engine ranking. Make sure blog owner will give a link back, read their blog post and then leave a valid comment. If their comments are un-moderated, your comment and link will show up immediately.
