3 Reasons Smokers Fail To Quit And How To Make Use Of Your Previous Smoking Cessation Attempts.
Have you ever felt a failure due to unsuccessful smoking cessation attempts
? Youre not alone!
Most smokers have had at least one previous attempt to quit smoking before they finally achieve complete smoking cessation so it is a good idea to take a look at what you have learnt about yourself and your smoking habit from these attempts and use this information to bolster your next attempt.
A review of your past experience will determine what helped and what hindered. It will allow you to plan ahead by identifying future problems and making a plan to deal with them in advance.
There are usually a 3 basic reasons why people fail to quit.
1.They didnt really want to quit
2.They get a secondary gain from smoking (more about this in a minute)
3.They didnt understand the process and what is required to be successful
Lets address these individually.
Didnt really want to quit
Many smokers tell me they are trying to quit. This is quite meaningless.
What they mean is they are thinking about it but are not at all committed.
This is often called the Contemplative stage. Some smokers are actually pre-contemplative. They are not even thinking about it but will say they are trying to quit if asked.
For successful smoking cessation it is essential to be 100% committed to becoming a non-smoker.
They get a secondary gain from smoking
What does this mean? It means that although there are drawbacks (so to speak!) to smoking cigarettes, there is also a hidden benefit.
An example of this could be when smoking a cigarette takes the focus off an unpleasant feeling or thought that they are not ready to address in a useful way. This allows the perception of such things as freedom, peace of mind or perhaps confidence. These are big things to give up.
This process is usually quite unconscious.
Another example is gaining connection with friends and loved ones by smoking together. This makes it very hard to quit if the smoker thinks they must give up that love and connection as well as the cigarettes.
Of course it is not true. They simply need to modify the way they connect or deal with feelings and find different ways to achieve confidence or peace of mind.
Didnt understand the process and what is required to be successful
This is common.
Many smokers come to see me for Hypnosis to quit smoking and even though the process is clearly explained, they sometimes do not really hear me. Perhaps they are still waiting for the magic wand to wave over them and fix it!
The lack of understanding is also strongly related to the first two reasons outlined above; not understanding that a strong commitment is needed, nor understanding that some alternative behaviours are required.
Their focus is often on what they dont want and yet they have no clear picture in their mind of what they do want.
This is where hypnosis is useful and a hypnotherapist will help the smoker visualise their future life as a non-smoker. Having no vision is a bit like deciding to visit a new country without doing any research. It may make it more interesting but also more stressful for being unprepared!
So How do you Make Use of Your Previous Smoking Cessation Attempts?
First of all, go through the three reasons outlined above and analyse where you went wrong.
Make a list of reasons why you were not successful, of situations that you found difficult. These may be physical locations, emotions or they may be interactions with certain people or tasks. Think of new healthy ways to behave in these situations.
Write out a compelling future. That is, write out in detail your daily life as a non-smoker. Where will you be, who will be there, what exactly will you be doing, feeling, seeing at every point in your day? What will you be wearing? How will your breathing be? Can you run faster? VISUALISE all of these things and write them down.
If you cannot do this, start keeping a smoking diary. This will give you some information to work with and begin to identify what stops you from being successful.
Then make an appointment at our quit smoking Brisbane clinic or a local hypnotherapist and do some preparation work.
