3 Reasons To Learn Spanish In Argentina

The financial crash of 2001 in Argentina resulted in a devaluation of the peso that sparked a significant boom in foreign tourism

. One long term result of this has been the emergence of a number of quality Spanish schools that provide the opportunity to study Spanish affordably. In addition to cost though, there are other reasons for opting to learn to speak Spanish in Argentina too.

1) Few Argentines speak English. Unlike nations in the northern hemisphere which have greater contact with American tourists, businesses, music and movies, Argentina has had relatively little contact with English speakers. Until recently, the French language was considered by Argentines to be of a higher standing than English and the people who had the resources to learn a second language tended to learn French instead.

Even though attitudes are fast changing there now (learning English is now an obligatory element of childrens' education), English is still seldom spoken fluently by Argentine natives. This serves as a great benefit for students of Spanish as it will be necessary for them to use the local language to get by.

2) It is easy to understand Argentines. Argentines do not speak overly fast, and they do not mumble or swallow consonants, like Caribbean or Central American Spanish speakers. Lots of newcomers to Spanish have difficulty differentiating between words when listening to spoken Spanish because they cannot hear the stopping of one word and the beginning of the next. Studying the language whilst in Argentina reduces this problem.

You will of course acquire an Argentine accent when you speak Spanish, but this is no great problem, and you will still easily be able to be understood by Spanish speakers in other countries. In fact, having a slight variation on standard European Spanish can be a good thing, as when you speak in Spanish to natives of other Spanish speaking countries, they will be intrigued as to how you acquired your accent, making it a good ice breaker.

3) Argentines talk a lot. Spanish students will find no problem in getting others to practice with because a talkative culture exists there and it is easy to start a conversation with perfect strangers.

When Argentines find out that you have gone there specifically to study Spanish and to learn about their culture, they will be particularly welcoming, and you can expect to be asked to have dinner at their houses, and to be taken sightseeing. Confident learners will undoubtedly benefit from such an open environment.

To take advantage of this language learning opportunity you should conduct some online research. Whatever your preference, a relatively short four week study vacation, a six month home stay, or something in between, you will be sure to find something in Argentina for you.
