3 Reasons Why It Helps To Be Young In The Offshore Oil Industry

There's no way to put this politely: this generation of twenty-something's are going

to be poorer than their parents before the latter are on a whole loaded loan sharks who nevertheless hang on to their jobs by tooth and nail. With no end in sight for the global recession, it's often impossible to get a job unless you've got experience, which does not bode well for fresh entrants in the labour market.

There is one field, however, that actively seeks out the young - and we're not talking about dead-end jobs or flaky one-off businesses. This is a career that combines skills with fitness, mental and physical, something that will challenge even the most timid amongst us to grow and prosper.

And it involves being sent to a remote island miles and miles off the coast.

*No it's Not a Survivor or a Concentration Camp for the Young: An offshore oil rig does very little on the surface, merely trodding along in the sea and siphoning oil off a bottomless abyss. This hardly does justice to the tremendous engineering feat that's tucked underneath, the steel-and-concrete towers that are amongst the tallest structures ever built by mankind.

There's also one other detail so often neglected: the pump runs nonstop, because there's always more demand for oil than there is supply (or even inventory, for that matter, which is why the American Government has its own Strategic Reserve). It's far more profitable to house double the crew size - around 200 on each rig - and have them work twelve-hour shifts than simply switch off the pump at night.

*So Why Is This Industry Any Different From Any Other? If you go on an oil rig tomorrow, you'll find all sorts of people up there. The average age of the crew is 27 or so in America, and a few years older further west. There will be quite a few old hands on board, as well as teenagers.

Anyone who's under the impression that middle-aged people (say, early fifties) simply can't handle a job on an offshore oil rig is sadly mistaken. For one thing, there are a large number of posts in the control room that needs to be filled, and of course people who man the rigs need a variety of skills as well.

Technicians are almost invariably understaffed, because the combination of adaptability and the ability to read drawings is far rarer than it sounds.

*Get In There Before They Get Out: If you embark on a career today, you'll be learning your ropes alongside these esteemed masters for just the right length of time before they retire en masse.

A few years down the road, as the world comes to terms to peak oil and start building rigs at a frantic pace, you'll have a stellar resume that is truly unique, in the sense that all your competitors would have retired, leaving you to dictate the terms.
