3 Steps To Having A Better Relationship With Your Teen - From A Parenting Ebook

A parenting ebook can teach us many things. Getting through to teenagers is probably one of the hardest things to do. It takes a lot of patience. Below you will find three steps you can take to make your relationship with your teen better.

Having trouble connecting with your teenager? Is your teen rebellious, resentful, retreating (becoming secluded and non- social)? You can change this, there is help. Raising teens is full of challenges and adolescent behavior can push a parent's buttons like nothing has before.

Most parents can remember what it was like to be a teenager. But looking back on a past situation with a life full of experience and education is totally different than actually being a teenager. Parents can recall the experience, but can never again look on it with the ignorance of a teen. Hopefully we have learned from our past experiences.

At this stage in a child's life there are so many changes going on with them. Their bodies are changing and their brains are developing exponentially. So many times this is where parents either say they "give up" or begin to punish them harder because they aren't at a full understanding of what is going on. This is the point where you need to be at a more understanding point in your child's life. Understanding the life changes teens are experiencing is one key to understanding adolescent behavior.

These are some of the ways that work:

1) Get more involved with your child. You may be saying "easier said than done" but it really isn't. This is a time in your childs life where they are becoming more confused. They don't have an understanding of what is going on. It is your job as a parent to help guide them through this tough time. Try spending more time with them. Get to know what activities they like and do them. Remember to show some enthusiasm.

2) Get to know your teenagers friends. being a part of your teenagers life is more than just being a parent. This is where you have the opportunity to become their friend as well. By getting to know their friends, you can also get some free help. If your kids friends like you, that is one big plus. They may begin to see you in a different light.

3)Listen to what your teenager is saying. Well-meaning parents give lots of advice to teens through lectures and nagging but have a tough time being good listeners. How can you expect your child to listen to you if you don't listen to them? Using respectful communication skills is a way to show love when parenting teenagers. This will help you to gain respect from your child as well.

As parents, it's helpful to know that positive attention is going to go a lot further than negative attention. Good parenting means bringing positive reinforcement when appropriate, and correcting them in a positive manner when they have done wrong. That doesn't mean to let you teenager get away with murder, but to reprimand them in a positive manner.
