1. Getting Ideas

First thing you want to do is get as many ideas as you can. The easily way to do this is to start collecting cake decorating books and magazines. When you visit your local Walmart, thrift store, book store, or maybe you visit Craigslist or eBay, look for cake decorating books. The more ideas you have handy, the better prepared you are when someone asks you to create a cake for them, or a new client comes in looking for a specialty cake.

2. Make Your List

Making a list is very important before you go shopping. First check to see what tools and supplies you are going to need for your cake, then make a list, and check your current stock to see what you will actually need to buy. Then make a list of ingredients you are going to need, I suggest over buying on the ingredients, it is always good to have extra ingredients to be prepared for mistakes.

3. Practice Makes Perfect

Any time you buy a new tool or need to learn a new decorating technique it is so important to practice using them or practice the new technique. You need to make sure you are really proficient with any new tools you just added to your tool belt. If it's a new icing or decorating technique then it is vital to practice, practice, practice. Icing techniques take a lot of time to learn and get them just right, so make sure you have it down, before cake making day.
