Once part of the Eastern European bloc, Bulgaria was locked to tourists for decades at a time. It has only opened its doors relatively recently and is coming to grips with the influx of tourists keen to see what the country has to offer. Although many tourist facilities are still being developed, there is plenty to occupy you if you plan well enough in advance. Let's take a look at three surprises you might not have expected.

The Black Sea Coast. Once synonymous with dreary landscapes and overcrowded tourist accommodation, the Black Sea still provides an attraction to locals and tourists alike. Unlike its neighbouring counterparts, Bulgaria's Black Sea coastline is largely bereft of the usual tourist developments that have scarred other parts of the coast. In fact, it is possible to find some of the most beautiful parts of Bulgaria including secluded sandy beaches, unusual rock formations, and easily accessible beaches to relax and enjoy the summer sunshine.

Surprise Bulgarian Cities. Most tourists tend to avoid major cities when planning their holidays, but in Bulgaria you should plan to visit a few of the major cities, especially Sofia and Varna. Sofia has some amazing architecture and an eclectic blend of modern cafes and restaurants. It is the largest city in Bulgaria and because it has not been a popular tourist destination, gives you a delightful insight into everyday Bulgarian life the Ottoman mosques and Red Army monuments provide a stark reminder of the ancient and more recent past the Bulgarian nation has had to live with.

Varna is the third-largest city in Bulgaria and by far the most interesting on the Black Sea coastline. It is both a naval base and a seaside resort, an interesting contrast which will not escape your notice. It is probably the best base you can choose to launch daily exploits into this region of the country.

Bulgaria enjoys a surprisingly mild climate in summer and although the winters can be very cold, the skiing can be fantastic and a revelation to tourists who rarely plan to visit. Whichever time of the year you choose to travel, travel insurance is an absolute necessity and should be an essential part of every traveller's plan.
