3 Things To Avoid Taking Sides

There has always been a side to take in any situation

. Through general beliefs and ideals, people act in accordance with others who think the same way. Its only natural that like-minded people with agreeable ideas would inherently side with each other when arriving at a single choice or decision.

Of course, taking sides doesnt necessarily appear that way, especially when others oppose your choices and decisions. Choosing a side basically makes the statement that youve chosen to stand with a certain group and will thus stand against others. That is the part that many individuals fail to consider when they do take a side, regardless of reason.

In the business environment, sides of an equation are only half of the whole. 2 +2 = 4 sounds simple, and ultimately provides all the information and the answer to the situation. If you simply have the first portion, 2 +2, then you have a question. If you have only the 4, then you have no idea what to do with it. It takes both sides of any coin to make cents, pardon the pun. And the ability to have both sides of every situation readily available to you is exactly what businesses need to stay sharp and successful.

In the office

So, its up to any business professional to avoid taking sides, especially since that would ultimately split a business into factions that work against each other rather than together.

Mitigate without judgment

Consider all that goes on in the office. During constructive discussion and creative thinking meetings, ideas spread out and it is completely expected that certain individuals will prefer their own ideas. Your task is to mitigate discussion and be open to all ideas and theories. Be indiscriminate in your decision making. The best answer gets the prize, not the favorite student.

This can be done by simply requesting a fair share from all those involved, which is what their job is supposed to provide after all.

See what is being said

Focus on the objectives of the assignment. Dont focus on who is saying what. Rather focus on what it is that is being said. Focus on sticking to the topics and conversation, instead of just listening to a few select choices. You dont want to send out a message that would propose that you are going to take sides or have a favorite source.

Here, you need to remain outside the conversation and see what is being said. A mother once said to her son: Surely you cant hear with your mouth open and your ears closed. Listen to what everyone has to say so that you can base your decisions without the hindrances of pre-conclusion.

Resist pressure

The third task to avoiding taking any sides is to never feel pressured or rushed into a decision, whether it is from within or through an outside force. Its your job as a business analyst to step back and see the entire picture. Only then are you able to see what choices need to be made to get the best results.

Basically, you must simply make a decision when youre ready, not when a particular side or faction demands it of you.

Things can get emotional

Business conversations arent the only time you should never takes sides. Emotions are always underlying factors that are difficult to calculate, even in a world of numbers and logistics. But, there will be times when employees will succumb to feelings and often result in the creation of sides.

First of all, you have to avoid emotional involvement. Dont use spite or favor in any professional situation. Your feelings can cloud your judgment and will inevitably cause more problems than you think they might solve.

Then consider what happens between employees and how to not be caught in the trap of taking sides. When an employee persecutes another, it always leads up to who is on whose side, regardless of how unprofessional it is. Once again, taking sides will only make things worse, and the only choice is to remain a neutral medium that brings balance to the situation rather than a grain of rice that tips the scale.

There will always be sides within business, as individuals agree to disagree. But, that is how everything reaches a balance, which is where you must enter the equation. It is the = notation that is crucial to completing a successful level of equivalence within the business. You should be the constant, working with those around you until they balance out into success.
