3 Things To Look For When Shopping For High Quality Canvas Or Poly Tarps
Picking the right tarpaulin for the task at hand is important to get the job done right
. There is nothing worse than having work materials spoiled by water from a leaking material, a light weight material that blows away in the wind, or a material that doesn't stand up to the sun's UV rays. The following article compares the different types of tarpaulins and focuses on three qualities to consider when shopping for the right product for the job.
Heavy Duty Material
The material of construction determines many of the properties of a product's application. On one end, poly tarps are an inexpensive option and work well as temporary covers. They are water proof and work well in low temperature environments and during the winter. As a trade off, poly tarps are also the least durable material due to their lower cost. Direct sunlight in areas with a strong sun and a lot of heat could deteriorate the poly material in a few months time.
Canvas tarps are a durable and environmentally friendly solution. They are breathable and will not trap moisture underneath; however, this also means that they are not water proof, only water resistant. If left in standing water, mildew may be a problem. Otherwise, canvas tarps have a long service life if they are properly maintained. The most important maintenance is to repair tears immediately so that they do not spread. By adding a finish to the material, they can be used as a car or boat cover; without a finish, they may leave a stain.
Lumber tarp products are designed to cover cargo loads for tractor trailers. Heavy duty lumber tarps are made from 18 oz vinyl coated polyester fabrics. Lumber tarps have 8 foot drop, 6 foot drop or 4 foot drop for cargo load side protections.
Fabric Weight
Fabric weight is another important consideration when matching a cover to a job. Lightweight materials are easier to handle and won't put extra strain on whatever is beneath them. Lighter weight products also make good shelters since they are easy to prop up to create an enclosure. Heavy duty weights will stand up to higher winds and generally be more resistant to wear and tear. A higher fabric weight will also create a strong barrier against the elements. Overall, consider how the weight of a cover could affect what lies underneath and how the environment will interact with that covering.
UV Properties
Any tarpaulin that is used outdoors will be subjected to the sun's rays. While they may seem harmless, the sun puts off UV radiation that can severely harm certain types of covers. Low UV radiation is found during the shorter winter months as well as the farther north you go. During the summer or in southern states like Arizona, Texas, Florida, southern California, and most of the Gulf Coast, UV radiation is strong.
Poly materials are the least resistant to UV rays and will quickly degrade in strong sunlight. Canvas and vinyl products should be coated with a premium finish or UV coating to improve their resistance to the sun. Neoprene products generally hold up very well to the sun with or without a finish.
When shopping for quality tarps, keep in mind the intended use and how that interacts with the material, weight, and UV resistance.
