3 Things You'll Need to Master the Violin

It's truely sad how many people second guess themselves before undertaking a new hobby. Aren't I too old to learn violin? Aren't I too young to master violin? Can I master it with the time I have? I've heard even more absurd ones, but these are the most common. They are excuses in question form, nothing more.

You can learn to play the violin at any age. I remember seeing a four year old playing violin like a master before. The idea that you can't teach old dogs new tricks is also garbage. Don't give up. You can have anything if you want it enough and believe you can have it.

There are a few qualities that will make the difference though. Anyone can learn these, but on some level they must be present and working.

First up is that you have to want it enough. If your drive isn't high enough you'll give up at the first obstacle. And you will face obstacles when you're attempting anything worth doing. There are ways to improve or supplement your drive, but it has to be there at some level.

You also need to be willing to take regular action towards mastery of your instrument. If you aren't practicing regularly, you won't see improvement. Scheduling this practice time works wonderfully. The longer you maintain a schedule when it comes to practicing your violin lessons, the easier it is to maintain. While this may be a strain at first, stick with it and it will become easier. Once you've instilled the habit in you, it'll carry you through rough times.

If you aren't good when it comes to discipline, at least initially, you must be creative. Getting leverage on yourself is key. You'll run into rough times where you feel terrible, tired, or don't see the point of practicing. This leverage needs to be able to carry you through those times. Mastering the violin or not can't be all that's on the line for you.

Should you value your honesty a lot, tell everyone that you'll be able to reach a certain goal by a given time, and invite everyone you can to watch you do it on that date. If you're broke, bet your last few dollars that you'll be able to play a given song perfectly by a specified date. Make sure you can't weasel your way out of it and find a way to fail.

Generally, those who have taught themselves violin are more disciplined and motivated. Get in contact with some of these individuals if at all possible. Don't be afraid to pick their brains until you annoy them. They have invaluable information. Another good thing to do is watch live performances from violinists who make your jaw drop. The more positive associations you have to your instrument in other areas of your life, the less you'll resist when it comes time to practice.

Think of this as a commandment for those who wish to excel: Love thy violin. Take care of your fiddle so you're happy with it; develop a bond with it. Distinguished musicians look down on those who let their instruments get worn down. Not only that, but it will degrade your pride in playing it.

The longer you do things like this the easier it becomes, so stick in there and you'll have mastered your instrument before you know it.
