3 Ways Your Wild Weekends Kill Your Finances and Health
It's Friday morning and you wake up with a smile on your face! It's payday and you hop out of bed with more energy than any other day of the week. The weekend passes and now its Monday morning and you wake up again feeling like s!#h for two reasons. 1 is that you had a wild weekend and 2 is you are damn near broke and you do not get paid again for another two weeks. You say to yourself, "What in the world happened in a three day time span that nearly wiped out my funds? I have to somehow make it to payday but how?"
Happy Hour-
Don't we all know about Happy Hour. Happy Hour is usually a five day a week event at most places but bars and restaurants love Fridays because it is usually one of their most profitable days of the week. Happy Hour usually starts around 3 or 4 in the afternoon conveniently around the time many people leave the office with a bank account full of freshly earned money and doesn't end until around 7pm. The places are flooded with people wanting to socialize and drink into the weekend while scarfing down half off appetizers. Since there is so much socializing during this time, many people continue to buy more drinks and more food they probably don't need. Drink low calorie alternatives such as low calorie beers and drinking water with your mixed drinks are healthier ways to enjoy your favorite drinks. I know it's easier said than done but you wouldn't be reading my advice if you didn't want to do it right? Most foods on the happy hour menu are not the healthiest so make sure to eat a minimum amount so that you don't ruin all the hard work you have put in. Eating prior gives you more control over what you eat instead of being limited to what's on the menu. If you have to eat at the bar try sharing your appetizer with another person. I'm sure your friends are just as hungry as you are so instead of devouring those super nachos all by yourself ask for another plate and have your friend eat some of those calories so you don't have to. Splitting food also helps you in the cash department too.
Clubbing-
Aww clubbing is a weekend ritual for most people. It is the weekend and most people do not have to wake up early for work. Clubbing can be fun but most people look at their bank accounts the next morning with a hangover from hell wondering what happened last night to their money. Even when having fun dancing or whatever you do at the club make sure you still are in control of what you spend and eat. When the club closes, you may worked up an appetite from all the drinking and dancing. This is one of the worst times to forget your health goals. What is actually open after 2am? Those fast food joints with the 24hr drive thrus are just waiting for your business, and waiting to set your nutritional goals back tremendously. One piece of advice is to have a snack bag consisting of trail mix, some water, some fruit. and chewing gum. These snacks will help you suppress your hunger at least until you get home where most likely you have healther food choices waiting for you. I know it is easier said than done but if you are serious about you health and finances, why not give it a try?
Shopping (Weekend Only Sales)-
Ever notice how department stores like Macy's and Sears always have a weekend sale? Well they know people like to spend money on those days. Are you one of those people who like to shop on those days? While at times you have to treat yourself, do it in moderation so you can still at least put gas in your vehicle to get home from the mall. Ask yourself do you really need those new pair of shoes when you haven't even broken into the last pair you bought. Or here's another idea, just stay away from places you know you can always find something to buy. Sometimes you have to not trust yourself and keep yourself out of harms way. Doing this will reduce your chances of going broke before your next paycheck. All these "sales" can add up over time and you spend way more than you wanted. Now I like nice clothes like any other person but you have to ask yourself do you really need them. Shopping does not have any health affects unless you just lose your mind if you miss one of these weekend sales.
Stop the Cycle!
Look, we all look forward to the weekend. For most of us it is time off from work which means more time to spend money carelessly. While it is important to enjoy your time off, it is also important to change your habits in order to make sure you will have money and sanity to start the cycle all over again the next week. There are ways to make the best of your weekend while keeping your money and health goals in order. You have to find what works for you.
