The College has received a $300,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Violence Against Women in an effort to prevent such crimes on campus and in the community.

The three-year grant will support a project designed by campus and community leaders. It includes the hiring of a victims' advocate, the purchase of a new radio system for campus police and additional training for campus police, local law enforcement and health and social services personnel, according to a release from the college.

"This three-year grant will provide the funds for us to make significant strides in preventing violence against women on campus and in the surrounding community," . "While prevention of crimes is our primary focus, it is also critically important for us to have a well-coordinated response plan in place, staffed by supportive, well-informed professionals. This grant will help us update and strengthen the systems that are currently in place." for departments such as Campus Police.

In 2009, the college was the site of three reported incidents in which men attempted to gain entry into female students' rooms, including one rape. That suspect was identified and charged earlier this year. No arrests have been made in the other two incidents, which campus police have said were unrelated.

This spring, the College called together leaders from local health, social service and legal organizations to discuss ways to improve the community's prevention of and response to domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking. The result was the proposal for the Justice Department grant.
