31Eighty-Boutique Hotel with More Stars than it's Hollywood Neighbor

In the early 1900's a successful Southern Glass maker was looking for a change. In 1903 he found one. He discovered a way to mechanize the process of glass blowing, revolutionizing the industry.

For a few more years he worked hard, perfected his craft, designed and distributed his revolutionary machinery, expanding his glass manufacturing empire and still dreaming of change. In 1908, he heard of a place out west that was gaining popularity for its beautiful weather and views. This place was Santa Monica, California.

The pier area was growing, people were coming to visit this beautiful Southern California Beach from all over the world, making it the perfect place to market and manufacture his new wares. So, in 1909, La Santa Monica Glass Blowing Factory opened its doors. Art Nouveau was still a popular style which made his sweeping and elegant glass pieces high in demand in this Southern California hot spot.

Times were changing. As the market changed, this savvy Southerner expanded his production into new areas.

In the 1930's severe local flooding and the need to move to a larger facility closed the factory down. As the entertainment industry grew in the Los Angeles area he quickly converted this surf-side location into a radio and television broadcast studio. These Studios quickly outgrew this location too and expanded to larger locations in Hollywood.

In the 1950's the building was transformed into an apartment building staying true to its original design. With it's original character and Hollywood Drama style past, it appropriately became housing to some of the most popular up and coming stars and starlets to be seen on the Silver Screen.

In the late 1980's the apartments closed. The family felt so connected to the building and its history they put it into a trust until they could decide what to do.

After over a decade of waiting, 31Eighty was finally born.

The name 31Eighty comes from the temperature of the melting point of blown glass.

31Eighty will incorporate the history of the family and the factory.

With the combination of Southern Hospitality, the stability of factory form, and high style of historical design styles, 31Eighty is a place like no other.
