36 years of the BMW 3 Series

BMW has been producing the 3 Series since 1975; it is the German car manufacturer's compact executive saloon competing in the same segment as the Mercedes C Class and Audi A4. Since its launch it has been BMW's best selling model, it alone accounted for 40% of BMW car sales in 2005. The 3 Series has always been available as a 4 door saloon, a 2 door saloon (Coupe), estate and convertible. There have been 5 generations of the 3 Series since 1975, the first ever model was a replacement for the BMW 2002, it was a 2 door saloon model, the cabriolet was later built by Baur under license from BMW. The second generation was released in 1982 and ran until 1994; it was available as a 4 door saloon, a coupe, a convertible and an estate. The third generation 3 Series came to the market in 1990 and ran for 10 years, like its predecessor it was also available in 4 different body styles. The 1990 model looked significantly different from the previous model, it looked more sporty and bigger. In 2000, BMW unveiled the fourth generation 3 Series, the estate and coupe models were added a year later. The fifth generation and current model was unveiled in 2005; the coupe and convertible went on sale a year later in 2006. The new BMW 3 Series in Shrewsbury has been completely re-engineered from the previous model, including changes to engines, transmission, the passenger compartment, suspension technology, as well as the addition of a host of high-tech features and options.
