3D Movies: Do They Have Ill Effects On Kids' Eyesight

?

Many parents fear that watching 3D movies can damage their kids' eyes but can kids' eyes really be damaged is a question of great concern.

With the popularity of 3D movies, audiences especially children are more inclined towards them, and of course they have a valid reason for this, these movies are full of thrilling and exciting experiences and they provide more entertainment than the ones in 2D. But whether they have ill effects on the eyes or not is indeed a debate worthy topic.

Marty Banks, Ph.D. who happens to be the Professor of Optometry and Vision Science at University of California, Berkeley suggests that perhaps it is safe to watch 3D movies as with the advancement of technology, various electronic devices, gizmos, and gadgets have also seen much technical advancement and the latest three dimensional movies are made using quite sophisticated technology which doesn't have as harmful effects as the older technologies had.

Mr. Banks found in a research that watching three dimensional movies from considerably close proximity does have harmful effects though not much, yet people subjected to the survey complained that they did have some minor problems like eyes getting tired, or feeling slight headaches. The research was basically conducted because Mr. Bank's team was concerned about the effects that the closer 3D screens such as TV sets, cellular phones displays, and the desktop computer screens have on human eyesight. The study revealed that watching 3D movies from close proximity strains the eyes and even makes the vision blurry but when watched from safe proximity such complains are seldom found.

However, no such research has yet been done on children and there is no clue what effect does the movie have on the eyesight of children. He has simply asked the parents to be cautious while taking their kids for the three dimensional films. If the children complain headache, or weariness of their eyes, parents should take them out of the cinema, or simply remove the glasses meant for watching the movie. But yes, he assures that if children do not complain any kind of discomfort while watching such films they won't have any trouble watching them and their parents should not worry unnecessarily.
