4 Common Misconceptions About Roughnecks
Technical know-how doesn't come from a manual or two weeks on a training course
. It helps, naturally, but what you really need is hands-on experience. And this is where a roughneck position comes into the equation.
While the job title does conjure up this image of unskilled, possibly foul-mouthed labourers, it couldn't be further off the truth. Depending on your aptitude and experience, you could be a manual worker or a highly skilled specialist, with a resume on par with the highest-earning professionals in most industries. The meaning of names changes with the time, which is why industrious sportsmen, amongst others, have reclaimed this particular one over the course of the last thirty years.
As far as anyone who actually works on offshore oil rigs is concerned, since the seventies a roughneck is simply someone who works on the drill floor, handling specialised equipment. It is the roustabout who would be performing general labour, which ranges from loading cargo on cranes and helping out with the welders and mechanics.
*Not That you're Slagging off Roustabout: You might be thinking, "So the roustabout is the new roughneck, then?" Far from it. Performing run-of-the-mill maintenance work offshore is an oxymoron: there's nothing run-of-the-mill on an offshore oil platform. As a roustabout, you will be an indispensable team member in a very unconventional way.
*How is scraping rust indispensable? While the majority of routine work can be a bit monotonous, you need to bear in mind that the roustabout is the first step towards what could be a very long and productive career on a platform, so your supervisor needs you to make absolutely sure that you are comfortable with the environment. An offshore platform isn't like a diner with a bossy owner where you can just grin and bear it for a few months until you get numb to things.
*In the long run, you are either a good fit for the lifestyle, or you aren't, and no amount of selfless sacrifice is going to make up for it. And in the event of an impending emergency, a technician failing to get extra help in time could literally break the whole operation apart. If you think helping out a welder is tantamount to menial labour, try doing that with sleet slapping your face and gusts hitting three-digit knots.
*A Word On The Elements: There's no running away from the fact that offshore oil rig jobs could be dangerous. When you throw in heights, dirt, water, and a storm, and add a dash of inflammable fluids and combustible gases, things are going to go wrong once in a while. And you can help these good people out.
There are unsung heroes in every vocation: the stage hand with atomic precision, the silent porter in a political conference, the personal shopper for the First Lady. But unlike them, you will actually go on to the next level in this career.
