4 Important Tips on Starting Beekeeping
Although seen as potentially dangerous by many people
, beekeeping is in fact a safe and fun hobby that almost anybody can try. If you are thinking about keeping a beehive then there are a few key factors you should consider before you start.
How you will feed your bees - For the most part, bees can fend for themselves. The pollen and nectar they collect throughout the summer is enough to keep them going for many months. However, bees can have a tough time in winter when flowers are scarce and you may need to set up a feeder to help them take care of themselves. A sugar substitute can be placed into this as an additional source of food. You will also need a water source near your colony. This will allow your bees to get their daily water whilst remaining close to the hive, lessening the chance of them using other sources such as the neighbor's garden!
What to wear - Having the correct protective equipment is necessary when keeping bees to protect both you and them when you are collecting honey. You will need a thick beekeeping suit when checking on your bees to make sure that their stingers can not get to your skin. It is also helpful to have a bee brush on hand when checking bees. This will help you move them gently out of your way when you are collecting honey.
Where to place your hive - Deciding where your beehive will be sited is also an important decision. When bees leave the hive to search for pollen, they head off in a straight line from the mouth of their hive. This being said, it is important to build the hive in a position with the entrance facing away from areas where other people may be, such as neighbors' gardens. Access for you the beekeeper is also important and hives should not be put anywhere that you cannot access easily.
What your end goals are - If you are one of the majority of beekeepers that maintain hives in order to sell honey and make a profit, you should do some research before you get a hive. You may need to check if there are firms willing to buy your honey locally. If there are not, then you will have to sell to a company that is further away, which will include additional costs such as transport.
