1. Rushing Into Marriage.

Many couples today have lost sight of what marriage is really supposed to be. Most marriages nowadays get treated more like a business deal rather than a lifelong dedication of love and commitment. A relationship that leads to marriage should take at least a few years to grow. You need to know who you are getting married to. Psychologists say the typical infatuation (or "lust") lasts 3-18 months. Many people today get married after knowing each other for only a few months! No wonder a good portion of them fall apart. If you don't know who you're getting married to, you're probably going to find you're not very compatible.

2. Getting married for the wrong reasons.

A lot of people today don't look at how well suited they are for one another, they look at the wrong factors. When wrong factors are brought up that makes one think of money, status, good sex, or maybe because a child is involved. I understand that people may feel that they need to get married because they have a child together, but this really isn't a good reason. Did you know that divorce can have horrible long lasting effects on children. Children of divorce have a higher risk of divorce when they marry, and an even higher risk if the person they marry comes from a divorced home. One study found that when the wife alone had experienced a parental divorce, her odds of divorce increased to 59 percent. When both spouses experienced parental divorce, the odds of divorce nearly tripled to 189 percent. So getting married for the sole reason of not having a child out of wedlock may not only hurt the child emotionally, but diminishes the child's chances of maintaining a successful marriage.

3. Communication, or Lack Thereof

If a married couple doesn't communicate well, any small set of minor issues can turn into big problems. Married couples need to discuss everything together in order to avoid these types of mistakes. Not properly communicating with your spouse can lead your spouse to feel lost, alone, unwanted, and can possibly lead to mistrust. If you and your spouse can't tell each other about wants and needs how can they be taken care of? Based on a study by Larry Irion, married couples who have meaningful conversation are 4 times more likely to have a vitalized (happy, satisfying) marriage. Couples who don't communicate well generally also have a lack of Trust with one another.

4. Trust

Trust is the basic foundation for any marriage. Trust and communication are very closely linked together. Couples, especially married couples, need to maintain complete trust all the time. Trust is built by being completely open and honest with one another ALL the time. A marriage without trust will most likely be miserable and short lived.
