4 Reasons To Join The Gym
If you're considering joining a gym but are stuck for motivation
, take a look at these 4 reasons why you should go with your instinct and sign up.
1. To get you in shape - it's the most obvious reason, but it's the one that some find difficult to come to terms with, yet no matter what you tell yourself, your friends or your colleagues, the reason you've joined the gym is to lose weight.
Maybe you've put on an extra few pounds over the summer or you have simply been unhappy with your weight for several years, you have to remember that there's no shame in going to the gym and although you might feel out of place to begin with, after a few weeks you'll feel like you've been a member for years.
2. To stay fit - although you might think that this is the same as point 1, there's actually a distinct difference between getting into shape and staying fit.
Generally speaking, getting into shape means you're looking to lose the excess weight that you're carrying so you're fitter and healthier.
Staying fit, however, is the reason for going to the gym after you've lost this weight. You might think that once you've hit your target weight you can stop attending, but why risk putting the weight back on that you've just spent months losing?
3. For the social side - when you first walk into a gym and look around, it will seem as though everyone is doing their own thing. Most people will seem to have earphones on; others will be so engrossed in their exercise regime that they are concentrating on nothing else and several others are likely to be watching the television screens that are placed around the gym or on the equipment itself.
All in all, gyms can seem like particularly unsociable places.
However, once you start attending, you'll realise that they are in fact one of the most socially friendly places you could go to.
Yes, people might not enjoy talking when they're actually working out, but you'll find that you strike up conversations in between changing machines, getting a drink or just taking a breather - and that's without taking into consideration time in the changing rooms or the cafe after your workout.
4. To help you live longer - we all know the dangers of drinking excessively and smoking and how they can lower your life expectancy, but the dangers of being overweight in terms of losing years off your life are not as widely known.
Being overweight and unhealthy leads to a whole host of health problems, from issues with your joints right through to heart disease and diabetes, all of which can either make you feel older than you are or in fact reduce the amount of years that you're expected to live.
Work out regularly, however and you will not only meet your life expectancy, but you're more than likely to exceed it (a report by the BBC on 6 March 2009 showed that research into 2,000 men in their eighties found that those who started exercising in their fifties lived at least 2 years longer than those who didn't).
