How to Get Faster for Football & Increase Football Speed in 4 Easy Steps

We must get faster for football! The game has changed from the old days of battering ram offenses and giant, slow defenses. Now, speed is the name of the game. Even Offensive and Defensive lineman must be fast. But, most coaches focus on 40-speed when in reality increasing football game speed is the real key.

Here's 4 Ways to really get faster for football and increase game speed:

1. To Get Faster for Football, Get Stronger

There is no way around this point...if you're not strong, you won't be fast. For all the gimmicks out there, there's nothing that can replace heavy Deadlifts when it comes to increasing football speed.

How strong you are determines how fast you are, at least to a point. The first argument weak, cone-running, parachute-wearing types come up with is that Elite Powerlifters, especially the super heavies aren't super fast.

"Those guys Squat 1000lbs, they should be the fastest in the world!"

There is a point of diminishing returns.

But, for many guys, this might be in excess of 700-lbs. When you can Squat that much, let me know and we'll figure out how to further increase your speed without lifting more. But, don't come to me with your massive 405 and proclaim that strength work isn't key to increasing speed.

If you want to be faster for football, you need to concentrate on getting stronger on exercises like Box Squats, Box Front Squats, Deadlifts and Deadlift Variations, Cleans, and Squats. Work them hard, Max Effort style. Continue to increase the weights and your flexibility (more on that later) and you will get faster on the football field.

2. Improve Lateral Speed

Getting faster for football is about more than just running in a straight line. In fact, much of our game is played moving laterally or at different angles. To simply increase 40 speed will do little for game speed because we only run in a straight line during a football game part of the time.

You need to focus on your lateral strength and speed.

Do exercises like Lateral Lunges, Angle Lunges, Lateral Sled Pulls, Reverse Lunges, Bulgarian Squats, and Lateral Plyo Jumps.

These should be used every leg workout, for multiple sets of medium to high reps.

3. Train the Hamstrings to Get Faster for Football

Your hamstrings are your speed muscles. Many believe that training the calfs will make you faster, but this is untrue. Sure, it helps, but, your hams are what makes you fast on the football field.

The hamstrings must be attacked. Plan on working them at least twice per week. Exercises like Deadlifts, Snatch Deadlifts, Box Squats, Romanian Deadlifts, Kettlebell Swings and Power Cleans are what build football speed. Not running over hurdles in a tinfoil hat. These must be done heavily in order to get the kind of speed you desire.

Now, with that in mind, the hamstrings must also be trained dynamically. Most players never stop and think about the insane force we place on our hams during a game. Thus, we must prepare them for those forces by training the hams specifically for speed.

Building crazy strength in your legs is the first step in getting faster for football. But, as many a disapointed lifter has found out, it's not the only one.

Do exercises like Kettlebell Swings, Plyos, and Snatch Pulls. Plus, dynamic movements like Speed Box Squats.

4. Build Flexibility in Football Speed Specific Muscles

A contracted muscle can't contract any further. Tight muscles, especially in certain areas, are like breaks...if you are tight, the breaks are on and your football speed will be compromised.

You have to stretch the hamstrings, hip flexors, hips, glutes, calfs and back both passively and dynamically.

Dynamically stretch them before your workouts and passively after. Work on flexibility at least 3 times per week for 20minutes a session.

Wrap Up

Do these 4 things and you will get faster for football. Your game speed will explode and you'll be a much better football player.
