4 Tips For Giving A Proper Hermit Crab Bath
There are generally two reasons to give your hermit crab a bath
, either they need their weekly or bi weekly cleaning or they have been infected with mites. In either scenario, giving a proper hermit crab bath is essential to maintain your crabs health and happiness.
Items you will want to have handy when giving your little guy a bath includes a large straight sided mug, your hermit crabs of course, hermit crab chlorine remover, and water. It is best to avoid lightweight plastic containers that can tip over easily, but rather use a heavy container such as a mug. A container with straight sides is also good so your hermit crabs do not tip.
Preparing the Bath
Go ahead and fill the mug about half way with water, and be sure to use a dechlorinator to the bath water to give your hermit crabs proper water. Be sure to mix the additive well with the bath water and wait a few minutes. Also be sure not to use tap water for this step, as the minerals found in our drinking water can collect in your crabs shell and clog your crabs gills.
Preparing Your Crab
Because hermit crabs are more active in the evening time, wait until night to bathe your crab and you will want to have your crab out of his shell to properly bathe him. Be sure not to dig or force your crab out of their shell as this can stress him and if he is preparing to molt, this may kill him.
Starting the Hermit Crab Bath
Gently lift your crab out of the cage and lower gently into the prepared bath water. Be sure to wait a moment to see if the crab comes out of his shell, while allowing the water get into his shell to clean him thoroughly. If your hermit crab is on the shy or stubborn side, lift and tilt him slightly on the palm of your hand. This should help him come out of his shell. At this point, be sure to quickly lower it upside down into the water. Be patient, as this may take more than a few attempts.
Finishing the Hermit Crab Bath
Once your crabs shell is filled with water, go ahead and tilt him upright again so the water can drain out of his shell. Complete this step a few times to ensure proper washing of contaminants, dirt, and debris that were in the shell previously. Be sure to watch your hermit crab as he is air drying so he does not get into any trouble near ledges or with other household pets. After you are done giving your hermit crab a bath, carefully lower him into his cage.
Keeping your crabs bathed frequently will keep their shells clean of dirt or other debris, and will also help prevent issues with mites.
