4g Internet Makes Train Rides A Blast
In Europe, people take trains everywhere for vacations and business trips
, for romantic weekends and college party breaks (although they call it university!). In the United States, in contrast, train culture is less pronounced. Board the average Amtrak, and you will see a random mix of college students, Amish people, a few politicians trying to make a point, and families on a budget. But as the U.S. tries to develop its train system, it will become increasingly fashionable, convenient and affordable to take trains instead of cars. This will be great news for the environment, as train travel produces remarkably fewer carbon emissions. It will also be great news for the consumer, because train rides are infinitely more comfortable than plane rides. There is less security which means never having to wait in long lines or unpack your laptop or take off your shoes or go through invasive full-body scan x-ray machines. You can literally arrive at the train station 5 minutes before scheduled departure and hop on. There are also less stringent baggage requirements, which means never having to pay a $50 fine because your bag is overweight, or a $35+ fee because you want to bring a second (or in some cases, a first!) bag.
Another great thing about train travel is that you can spread out once onboard. You can take up two seats if the train is not particularly crowded, and you can take your stuff out and relax. There are even outlets where you can charge a cell phone or plug in a laptop. And, perhaps best of all, if you have a 4G phone that has access to mobile broadband, you can spend the entire plane right either relaxing, enjoying, and entertaining yourself, or catching up on needed work. With planes, you can use certain devices like laptops, but you can never get online with wireless Internet or make phone calls, regardless of what kind of cellular phone you have. This means that you end up spending the whole plane ride reading a dog-eared Dan Brown novel, engaging in dull conversation to humor the chatterbox seated next to you, or mindlessly flipping through the on-flight magazine. If you were smart, you will have picked up a trashy magazine or a Sudoku puzzle booklet in the airport books and magazines store.
But with your 4G phone on trains, it will almost be like you are at home or in your office. The second your train leaves the Rochester station, you will be able to do everything you always could with your phone. You can catch up on emails work or personal. You can read your favorite bogs, track the stock market, or watch the latest viral videos on YouTube. You can read the New York Times onlineor The Guardian U.K.or the Huffington Postor Vanity Fairor Sports Illustrated all in the palm of your hand. You can watch your favorite television shows with online hosting websites. You can also pass your time on the phone, whether making work calls or calling friends and family. Just make sure to be considerate and not talk too loudly!
