4x4 News: Life Begins At Forty For The Legendary Range Rover

The iconic classic Range Rover doesn't look a day over 39, but turning 40 marks the end of another era for Land Rover with some trendy modifications to bring it up to date. According to UKAutoBlog.com, The first model, the two-door Range Rover known as the classic, went on sale in 1970, promising to combine "Rover car comfort with Land Rover strength and four-wheel drive mobility".

When other vehicles changed shape and design the Land Rover stayed true to its original distinctive characteristics which made it so popular when it burst onto the scene 40 years ago. Boasting the title of "world's first vehicle as good on road as off-road", the Land Rover certainly has reason to celebrate, reports Motoring.co.uk. In addition, Managing Director of Land Rover, Phil Popham believes that "Land Rover has unique history of product innovation, but the Range Rover probably remains the most historically significant vehicle we have ever launched".

Revolutionary in its day, the Range Rover luxury 4x4 remains ubiquitous, with many adjustments bringing it firmly into the future. The first Range Rover was characterised by the square upright stance, which thankfully is still apparent in today's version. Also evident is the fact that the Range Rover "is really four vehicles in one", according to Land Rover's Managing Director, who also said, "Its seven-days-a-week luxury motor car; a leisure vehicle that will range far and wide on the highways and no-ways of the world; a high performance car for long distance travel and a working cross-country vehicle".

They say 40 is the new 30, which means Land Rover have even more reason to celebrate. According to LandRoverClub.net, "when you drive a Land Rover you drive history", and what a whole lot of history that is over four decades to be exact. AutoBlog.com have reported that "with the new compact Range Rover (currently known as the LRX) due to debut at this year's Paris show, the uniquely British 4x4 looks set to continue its march through the history books".
