5 Basic Skills You Need To Know As A Cna

If you are preparing for or planning on taking the Certified Nurse's Assistant (CNA)

test there are a number of clinical skills you will need to be more than adept at. Part of the examination deals with practical experience. Though compassion is an important quality to possess as a CNA, you will have to work with the aged, convalescing and disabled. The CNA training program will help you get on-the-job knowledge of these skills as you will get to interact with real patients.

*Basic care

As a CNA you will have to form a trusting and caring relationship with your patients. This is because you will be responsible for washing the patients, helping them to use the toilet and bed pan, shaving them, dressing and feeding them, and so on. These duties have to be handled very sensitively in a caring yet formal way, so as to not embarrass the patients. You need to be able to put them at ease.

*Patient requirements

As a CNA, you will be responsible for updating the patient's charts, checking temperature, vital signs and blood pressure. One of the skills you will need to develop is keeping an eye on any changes in the patient's state and report them immediately to your senior.

*CPR and emergency procedures

If you complete the CNA training program you will also learn how to implement several emergency procedures including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR. You will also learn all the emergency terms and expressions required.

*Dealing with patient Incidents

As a CNA, there will be times when you will have to deal with patient incidents. You will be assigned a patient for whom you will be responsible. If the patient falls or gets injured, you will need to offer prompt help and report the episode to the senior nurse or doctor on duty.

*Responding to call lights

Most medical care facilities have call lights attached to the patients' beds so that they can get the attention of the medical staff. It may or may not be an emergency but you will have to respond quickly when a patient's call light goes off.

These are just some of the main clinical skills, and the knowledge and correct execution of these skills are necessary to become a CNA. Joining a CNA training program will not only help you learn these skills, but will also give you an indication of whether you possess the characteristics and attitude for this profession.
