The game of blackjack is over 150 years old and yet you still find the same old, outdated, inaccurate and, frankly, stupid tips on how to win at blackjack.
You've doubtless heard people in the casino saying that they have a 'system'. You might even have come across people on the internet trying to sell you the 'no-lose-sure-fire-method-to-win-at-blackjack'. Don't be fooled. These systems don't work. All you have is your commonsense and a few straightforward blackjack strategies.

Tip #1 - When to stand
Put simply, you won't win a hand where your cards are lower than 16 unless the dealer busts. As the dealer has to hit on 16 or below, don't take this risk.
You will need to take the hit if the dealer shows 8 or more for his card, because the chances of the dealer going bust are very low. But, if you show 11 or higher and the dealer has 6 or less, you should stand. The dealer has a well over 40% chance of busting out.
Tip #2 " Double Down
If you get two cards totalling 10 or 11, you should definitely double down if your total is more than the dealer's up card. If not, you should take a hit.
By doubling down, you get an extra card and are, in effect, doubling your bet. Don't hesitate to do this when you think it will help you beat the dealer. Tables that allow doubling down give an additional advantage to the player, so look out for this online and in real world casinos.
Tip #3 - When You Should Hit
If you have between 12 and 16 inclusive and the dealers' card is a 7 or more, then you should take a hit. But, if the dealer's card is lower than a seven, you would be wise to stand. In this situation, there is a likelihood that the dealer will bust. Even if he does have a 10 as a hold card, the most he can get is 16 and so will have to take a hit.
Tip #4 " Know What and When to Split
If you have a pair of 8s or aces, you should pretty much always split them. However, it is unwise to ever split pairs of fours, fives or tens. However, if you see that the dealer's card is lower than a six, split all other pairs.
Tip #5 - Why You Shouldn't Take The Insurance Bet
The insurance bet in blackjack looks a good idea. It will cover you in case the dealer has a natural blackjack. However, 80% of the time the dealer won't have a blackjack and so you will lose not only your hand bet but the side, insurance bet as well. Not a good idea.
Here's a brief explanation of how the insurance bet actually works and why, of course, it isn't a good idea. The dealer's up card happens to be an ace, so you take the insurance bet in order to win back half your bet if the dealer has blackjack. However, four times out of five, the dealer won't have blackjack, so you have just lost 50% more than you would have otherwise.
